In the 1970s, the word 'lesbian' was rarely heard in conversation and the concept of being gay was not openly discussed or accepted. Gays were considered to be freaks, or worse, so consequently the author strove to hide her natural inclinations and appear 'normal'. This led to anxiety and depression and eventually a complete mental breakdown, where her treatment included shock therapy, mind reconditioning and a regimen of psychotherapeutic drugs. 'Coming out' was not an option at that time.
Over the years, Dru experienced a series of failed relationships and her lifestyle of alcohol abuse and anxiety attacks affected all aspects of her life, including study and employment opportunities. After coming out to her family and a few close friends, Dru found the courage to accept her disposition and lead a fulfilling and productive life with her long-time partner.
