How’s About That, Then? The authorised biography of Sir Jimmy Savile OBE, KCSG, tells the extraordinary rags-to-riches story of a working class hero.
Here is the truth about his brushes with death, his wartime toil down the mines, his dancehall days, his radio and TV stardom, his friendships with royalty, politicians and the stars of the music world, his women, his record-breaking charity work, his sporting life and the controversies that dogged him.
In his heyday, the brains behind Jim’ll Fix It and Top of the Pops became arguably the most famous man in Britain and raised more than £42million for good causes.
Born on the cobbled streets of Leeds on Halloween, 1926, he died two days before his 85th birthday and his three-day funeral was one fit for a king.
His friend and favourite journalist Alison Bellamy has spoken to every member of his inner-circle, family, former partners, lifelong friends and those whose lives he transformed through his generosity, time and care. It is the never-before-told story of a complex celebrity who was recognisable to millions but known by just a select few – until now.

Author and journalist Alison Bellamy became close friends with Sir Jimmy Savile after reporting on his escapades for the Yorkshire Evening Post, where she has worked as a news reporter since 1997.
The West Yorkshire mum-of-two little girls, Florence and Winnie, who is married to plumber Neil, also read prayers at Jimmy’s funeral, representing the media, which played such a huge part in the star’s life.
NUJ member Alison shared with Jimmy a mutual love of Scotland, as her mother comes from the Isle of Barra, in the Outer Hebrides. As a Yorkshire coalminer’s daughter, she much appreciated his stories about life down the pit.
Alison said: ‘I am truly honoured to have been his friend. He was an extraordinary man who led an extraordinary life. Writing his life story was a mammoth task as he packed so much into every day of his 85 years. I could easily have written six books about his adventures. I treasure the time I spent with Jimmy and hope I have done him proud.’
