When I think back to my initial introduction to pageants, it was love at first sight. I’m not sure how I came across the brochure that first inspired me to participate in the Miss Cinderella competition, but I do recall that it was something I had to do. I was 12 years old and already knew I wanted to be the next pageant queen. So, I begged my mom to let me enter the contest and my mother—admitting that she didn’t know a thing about beauty pageants—pledged her full support.
I won the city and state titles and had the time of my young life. My mother and I enjoyed meeting the other contestants and their moms. It was fun and exciting but since we were clueless about pageants, it was also trial and error. We failed to do many of the things that most pageant professionals recommend. My mom didn’t purchase my dress from one of the many popular pageant shops. She didn’t hire a pageant coach or even get advice from one. We submitted a photograph that I’d taken for another event as part of my application instead of having one professionally taken. Even after I’d won, we didn’t take any time to smooth out many of my rough edges because we simply didn’t know they were rough. How can you know what you don’t know?
Now you might be thinking, “If she won two titles without knowing anything about pageants then she didn’t need to know anything else.” Nothing could be further from the truth. Winging it could only get me so far. As soon as I entered the next phase of the competition, I lost flight quickly.
Within minutes of arriving at the International Pageant it became clear to me that my mother and I were not prepared for the challenge ahead. I was blown away by the other girls who were veterans in the pageant arena. Clearly, they were much more polished than I was and they were much more at home in the surroundings.
Not surprisingly, I didn’t come home with the crown. I didn’t even place among the top 10 contestants. My mom and I were shocked. It wasn’t just the loss that disappointed us, it was the feeling that we could have done better if there was more information available to us. Don’t get me wrong. We had an amazing time, but there is so much more that we wished we would have known.
My pageant days are behind me now. But, I can still capture the crown. How? Now, I can become a part of your child's winning team by sharing everything I know about pageants with you. In this guide, I’ll tell you how you can get your child in pageants, the requirements, the expenses involved, the secrets, the tricks, and everything you can expect from the time you fill out the application to the time your child claims their crown.
Are you ready for a ride through the wonderful world of pageants? Of course, you are. So, strap up, turn the page, and let the competition begin.
Best wishes,
Michelle Dyer, Former Miss Cinderella Ohio
