How to be a Great Corporate Videographer

    About

The techniques presented in this book are based on the collective experiences of my career as a corporate videographer that have spanned nearly three decades. It was my objective in writing this book to teach young and newbie videographers the secrets to achieving top-notch, award-winning videography.

The world of HD videography is amazing and no longer dominated by high-end production companies or movie studios. The recent introduction of compact, large-sensor cinema cameras, as well as 1/3” sensor mini-camcorders have leveled the playing field. Instead of borrowing upwards of $40,000 (or more) to lease a broadcast quality HD camera, you can pay cash for a camera system that will put you in the “game”. Have a great script you want to shoot? You won’t need to apologize for the image quality any longer.

But with this new technology comes certain responsibilities and challenges. With so many HD cameras out there in the market at such affordable prices, many clients, managers and producers will assume that whomever picks it up will know “how” to use it. Sounds simple, right? You follow the instructions in the manual and you get great video.

In case you missed the memo, your newly chosen occupation is based on the old saying: “You’re only as good as your last job.” Combine that with grueling 10-12 hour shooting days, where you handle loads of heavy gear, standing all day and taking one 30 minute lunch break. Do you have the creative moxie to quickly resolve lighting and shooting challenges in 5 minutes, dozens of times per day? Are you savvy enough to bridge the communication gap between what the producer and client want, and what you know can be delivered? These are just a few of the areas I will cover in this book.

If you’re just out of college or graduate school, or embarking on a new career path, this book will be your electronic “mentor”, so to speak. I will take you through every phase of being a professional corporate videographer, and explain what works and what doesn’t. You’ll learn tips and techniques that will help bring the “madness” level down, and get the creative juices flowing. Will you learn all of these same techniques presented in this book on the job? Probably, but it will take 10, 15 or more years of hard work. Why not spend the amount of money you’d spend on a couple of lattes, and get this information right now?

If you’ve been in the communications business for a while, whether you’re a freelancer or have full time employment, you may need a jump-start to bring up the level of your productions. This book will help fill in some of the areas you lack. And I promise I will not hold back. I will deliver on some rich content that will save you many headaches and help you serve up projects that are “Fast, cheap, good”. Tell your producer or client to pick “three”.

Don’t work in the dark any longer. Flip the switch to that 1K and step into the key light, and get ready for a concentrated dose of high-level videographer talk. You always wished you could work with the moxie of a veteran videographer. So what are you waiting for? Read on.
