I spent my childhood years, the 1940s and 50s, in Dr Barnardo’s Homes; surviving those difficult, often unhappy times using my natural guile and wit. With the ability to turn a negative into a positive, and with an unfailing sense of humour, once the Homes were behind me I attempted to handle my teenage years in exactly the same way. Although physically and mentally very strong…the enduring legacy of their cruel treatment had left me an emotional wreck. Denying myself any deep feelings for all those years, I defied the Carers by never crying …but ceded once in my new environment…the Outside world. “Homeward Bound” tracks my roller-coaster ride; from being a highly sensitive emotional child, through to the development of the woman I ultimately became. This book may shock…will sometimes sadden…but will always make you laugh.
