    About

"A marvelous look at the Hollywood of Yesteryear...."

An insightful look at some of the best movies to come from Hollywood during the decade of the 1940s. The Mark of Zorro, The Maltese Falcon, Laura, The Heiress and many more classic movies are featured and reviewed with interesting behind the scene stories and commentary.

From Hollywood and the Home Front.... "Variety the name of the game and the behind-the-scenes personnel were gaining more authority than in the 1930s, when the all-powerful studio ruled with an iron fist. Granted, MGM, Paramount and their lucrative cousins across town still reigned supreme (for now), but writers and directors were acquiring a freer hand than in the past. Auteur director Alfred Hitchcock made his American debut in 1940 with the gothic tale, Rebecca, and within the next ten years became one of the premier filmmakers in the history of Hollywood.

Besides the master of suspense, other foreign-born directors made their way to the United States during this period. The war and troubles overseas brought European émigrés, such as Fritz Lang, Robert Siodmak and Otto Preminger, to California, where they made names for themselves in the new genre of film noir; dark, taut thrillers which gained prominence in theaters, well into the next decade. Other directors, like Capra, Cukor and John Ford, among many, many others, continued to grow their already stellar reputations, crafting classics throughout the '40s."
