These 12 energizers from teacher-author and Responsive Classroom consultant Susan Lattanzi Roser were chosen especially to fit sixth grade needs and skills. All of them:
Work anywhere: In or out of the classroom, with children circled up, at their desks or tables, or waiting in line.
Work anytime: Between long instructional blocks, as morning meeting activities, before lunch, or after a field trip.
Are easy to teach: Directions are clear and simple, and many energizers include variations to add fun and challenge.
Sixth graders will enjoy these energizers—while also brushing up their academic and social skills. For example, “The Doctor Says” challenges memory and comprehension as students quickly find and tap their ulna, radius, scapula, etc., in response to the leader’s directions. “Mirrors” helps with observation, focusing, and self-control as students follow the slow, steady movements of their partner. And all 12 energizers grow out of the Responsive Classroom approach, a research-based way of teaching associated with greater teacher effectiveness, higher student achievement, and improved school climate.
