The Dolch list is a list of frequently used words, developed by Edward William Dolch, PhD.
The list contains 220 most commonly occurring words in the English language. These words make up 50 to 70 percent of any general, non-technical text. Dolch excluded nouns from his main list, but did compile a separate word list of 95 most common nouns.
Despite of the long history, today Dolch's words are still greatly used and highly recommended by both teachers and parents.
As the name sight words suggest, a child must learn and recognize these particular words by sight (memory) in order to become a fluent reader. Very often the words cannot be illustrated through pictures nor sounded out according to regular phonetic methods.
Dolch Sight Words are divided into five levels by grade.
Level 1-Preprimer(Pre-School)
Level 2-Primer(Kindergarten)
Level 3-First Grade
Level 4-Second Grade
Level 5-Third Grade
