This is a transcription of the ships logbook for the 2100 mi., 31 day, solo, bluewater crossing from safe harbor in Portland, Maine to the Island of Flores, Azores Archipelago by this self taught sailor, free to go with the wind after 28 years working his organic farm in the New Hampshire hills. It tells how the boat, a 1966 Bristol24 found in a "for free" listing on Craigslist and rebuilt in the authors barnyard with spare parts, and the author survived the first and in some ways, most challenging leg of his yearlong circumnavigation of the North Atlantic. Complete with Longitude and Latitude readings, and photos taken on the entry days, this account will either whet (wet) your appetite to cross the ocean yourself, or convince you that indeed sailors are a different breed of creature all together.
As an addendum the author includes the account of his encounter with a giant sea turtle trapped in breakaway fishing net and his attempts to save the doomed creature from the circling sharks....
