Muscle pain, fatigue, and sleep and mood disorders appear to have acquired special importance in our times. In many cases, these symptoms are only attributed to tiredness and stress related to a highly demanding, unhealthy pace of life, and the associated suffering is usually underestimated even by the patients themselves. However, their impact on the quality of life and work performance is considerable; in fact, it can be so severe that it may cause temporary disability. It is worth mentioning that the persons affected by this group of symptoms usually report to have seen several professionals before being diagnosed with fibromyalgia. The criteria to diagnose this condition have been developed a few years ago (in 1990) by the American College of Rheumatology and in 1992, it was included by the World Health Organization in the Tenth Revision of the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD-10). Though numerous enigmas about its pathogenesis are still to be revealed, advances in the understanding and treatment of fibromyalgia are constantly being made. For this reason, we are bringing this work to you, in which we have included the most recent knowledge on this disease, hoping it is useful to your everyday practice.
