    About

Fat Cat Stories are designed to help children with dyslexia, moderate learning difficulties or English as an additional language learn to read.
The books work best together with a holistic programme, which is still in development, but in the meantime the books are available for those who want to start using them. The books are designed to teach one word family at a time. They use a great deal of repetition. Each book builds on the next book and this makes it possible to go at the child's pace. Some children will need to read each book in order to get as much practice and repetition as possible. Other children will be able to read every second book or every third book. It is not recommended that more than four word families are taught at any one time. The books start off very easy with two and three letter words in order for children to experience success in reading. This in turn builds confidence and self-esteem.
Dyslexia is complex as many different issues can cause it. These books are designed to deal with as many issues as possible, including sequential processing issues, working memory issues and some aspects of visual processing. For children, who are struggling to read because of language issues or visual processing issues, they will need a professional programme to support them with these. These books can still be used together with that programme, but will not be sufficient on their own. These books are also designed for children who have learned their basic letter-sound correspondences, but are still struggling to use phonics for reading and spelling.
Instructions on how to use the books are at the back of each book.
I am an Educational Psychologist and a Learning Support Specialist and have used these books to teach children with reading difficulties. I wanted to create a resource for teachers and parents which they can use on their own to help children struggling to read. I do not claim that these books will 'cure' a reading difficulty. These books are part of a wider series, which is still in development. I will place an update on Amazon when more books and resources are available.
