Extensive Dictionary German-English
This dictionary is suitable for all kindle, kindle Keyboard and kindle Touch.
It offers you a big database with 400.000 entries thus nearly no wishes will be unanswered.
You can use this dictionary in two ways:
1) With the help of the search tool, you can use the dictionary as a typical reference book. As soon as you have found your desired word, you can -if required- move to subsequent pages and other translations will be displayed. For instance the word concerned can occur in sentences or word combinations.
2) You can endorse this dictionary as standard dictionary (see installation), in order to view translation while reading German literature. Therefore simply place the cursor in front of the word concerned.
Restrictions of this dictionary
Please note that this dictionary is not compatible with the Kindle-applications for iPhone/iPod, Android, PC and Mac.
The translation from German into English is considerably more difficult than the translation from English into German. I would like to give two examples to illustrate my point.
1. The German language has got a particularly flexible system of word-building. It is easy to build new words by combining different words (e.g.: Weihnachts+baum+verkäufer). The single words: Weihnachts+baum+verkäufer can be translated by your Kindle without any problems. However, the combination of the words provides no positive result, because there is no such database entry.
2. A further problem to get the correct translation are the declinable types of words. Declension in German language works by adding suffixes to nouns (e.g.: Haus, Haus-es, Häus-er, Häus-ern). Thus the recognition of all possible words, including suffixes, is almost impossible. Another example shall clarify the issue: „Das Haus meines Vaters ist toll.“ There is a database entry for the noun „Vater“ in its basic form. However, if the word occurs in its genitive form („Vaters“), there is no database entry. The best way to proceed in such a case is to look for the word in its basic form. The huge database (estimated 400.000 entries) provides almost all nouns in their basic form.
If you use this dictionary to translate German literature while reading, difficulties concerning very short words (not supported by the Kindle search tool/function) such as: er, sie, es, etc. can occur. However, these translations can be found conveniently by searching the dictionary directly.
