You can be a happy empath, but it does take some work. What does it take? Knowledge and practice, there is no way around it. We are born with a built-in antenna that is a power tool plugged in, working by itself. If we don´t learn to use it, we can hurt others, we can hurt ourselves, we can be messed up big time. If we do take the time to learn to use it, we can have a normal life, and use this tool whenever we want (instead of being used by it).
