Earthbound – Surfing the Apocalypse' is a 'transmedia novel' where the text that has been freely published chapter by chapter on the website www.earthbound-surfingtheapocalypse.com during the last twelve months.
But there’s more to the project than the text alone. The storyline has many other tentacles that manifest themselves in different forms and through different mediums elsewhere – both in the digital and physical universe.
These other manifestations come in the shape of digital works such as websites, blogs, user accounts and groups on social networks, photos on flickr and films on YouTube, but also as projects in the ’real’ world like art installations, stickers on lampposts in big-city streets, text printed on old techno record sleeves, comic strips and paintings from 20 years back.
In addition, there’s a musical side to the project. 'Earthbound – Surfing the Apocalypse - A Virtual Soundtrack' is a collection of 10 electronic musical pieces ranging in style from dubstep via house, balearica and industrial rock to post-apocalyptic campfire songs.
All these pieces of music stem from the personal blog of one Victor Ixelles (aka Vix) – the main character in 'Earthbound...', and are courtesy of both slightly known and previously unknown artists like Emmanuel Tegel, The Oscillators, Barry Cack Ensemble, Frost, Bakantaar, Hex Pistols, Illumination, PM, The Alien and Mental Overdrive.
Of the art installations that also stem from within the 'Earthbound...' storyline, some have already been on show.
The piece 'Pong' has so far been exhibited at the Insomnia Mini-Expo in Tromsø, Northern Norway in 2008, and the installation 'Elsewhere' was displayed at the SEAS International Arts Festival 2009 – also in Tromsø.
The next pieces are planned for showing in a solo exhibition at the Tromsø Gallery of Contemporary Art in October 2010.
