In Kenya, the search for internships and jobs is an arduous task. I had applied to a number of companies which I found listing internship opportunities either on the newspapers, the Internet or through referrals from people who had heard that I was looking to be an intern in an organization as part of my coursework. I had spent the better part of my first month on holiday, combing through the internet, making phone calls, sending out emails with a well written out Curriculum Vitae (C.V), cover letter, which explicitly stated my intention of being an intern. Many companies replied and informed me that either the position had been filled or that the position had been dropped. After a while of getting turned down, I decided to take up one of the companies I was referred to. It happened to be a small organization which was not even in the Accounting or the Finance Industry. After having a talk with the managing partner at the company, it was agreed that I would begin work the next Monday, which happened to be the last Monday in the month of April.
It offered remuneration as well as a course work related job description. It also held the promise of education and insight into an industry that I had little to no experience in, which is the Industry of Information, Communication and Technology. While on phone with the managing partner, we managed to agree on the relevant details pertaining to the job. The company was started by Mr. Ezra Cherus and his wife, Mrs. Rael Mandago when they came to the realization that many companies were lacking reliable support service providers. They discovered a niche that they could fill. With Mr. Cherus, the managing partner having a good background in Information Technology and a bit of a hand in accounting seeing as he's done ACCA in his past, the two came together and formed Visions Interactive. They labeled it a company that provides e-business solutions to companies that deal with sales so they mainly dealt with and have been dealing with Point of Sales Machines, their calibration, maintenance, standard setting with the accepted levels set by Kenyan laws. They started off with smaller companies and shops but have been steadily dealing with larger companies as the years have progressed. A good example of one of their larger clients is Total Kenya Ltd. They are providers of fuel in Kenya. At the fuel stations, other than the sale of fuel, there are convenience stores that provide a select few edibles, as well as a section which provides the basic essentials and oils required by most motor vehicles such as coolant liquids among other such oils. For Total Kenya Ltd, Visions Interactive ensures that the computers installed at each station around the country are up to date in terms of software and whenever hardware needs to be replaced, they handle the memo that is sent to the Head Office for the station managers. In summary, Visions Interactive provides computer related software and hardware solutions to businesses which handle large volumes of sales at any given time period.
Being part of the educative process just as all other units, it was a common expectation to have the mindset that the attachment would be solely for the purpose of school. I came to learn after the short two months of my working within a company that the classroom knowledge that we acquire must always be accompanied by one's own ability to understand and to use this knowledge appropriately depending on the problems faced in the real world. The classroom is entirely different from an office environment. This is in terms of the activities, the people you come across of most importantly, the rules of procedure. The presence of a supervisor is as important as the work itself. This is because they lead you to better understand what is expected of you and although they may not follow up, it enables one to realize that they need to be accountable for everything they set out to accomplish.
