Dennis Andrew Nilsen is a British serial killer and necrophiliac. Between 1978 and 1983, he murdered fifteen young men, some of them in the north London area of Muswell Hill. Hence he is known by the sobriquet the Muswell Hill Murderer.
He throttled and then drowned his victims, then performed a bizarre ritual of bathing and dressed their bodies. He then kept the corpses for considerable periods of time before butchering them. Finally, he disposed of the parts by either burning them or flushing them down the toilet.
Owing to the similarities between the methods of the two men, Dennis Nilsen is sometimes compared to the American serial killer, Jeffrey Dahmer.
Nilsen was found guilty of six charges of murder and two of attempted murder at the Old Bailey in 1983, and is currently serving his sentence at the HMP Full Sutton maximum security prison in Yorkshire.
