Sir William Burrill, late of the Yard, is spending some time at Scawdel Hall, his Lakeland retreat, where he hopes for some peace and quiet in which to finishing his latest play. The tranquillity of his country home is shattered however when he receives a disturbing telephone call from the local police - a man has been killed in mysterious circumstances whilst on his way to visit the Hall.
