The rusty bicycle on the book cover had accompanied a rural Chinese family for 47 years. Helen Wang was born in a remote and poor village in northern China. She grew up with this bicycle. Her Dad rode this bicycle, and she was sitting at the front and back many times. As the bicycle aged, Helen’s dreams evolved: from simply dreaming of candies, fruits, and a shining bicycle, to something bigger. In 1981, she went to a college in Beijing, and that opened her eyes. In 1996, she came to U.S. to pursue her dreams. This bicycle carried her parents’ love, family legacy, and the Chinese history of the last five decades. This is her story, in her words. A Chinese American looked back at the journey of her family in a fresh and unique way.
