Cross stitch is one of the most popular forms of embroidery – so popular that every craft store sells materials devoted to this. The gist of cross stitching is that you will do X-shaped stitches within a certain equal width of a number of warp and weft fabric threads to form a bitmap-like picture.
A special kind of fabric called Aida is used for this although other woven fabrics can be used – more of this will be discussed in the next chapter. Cross stitch is considered to be a folk art in Europe and Asia as evidenced by the antique household items with cross-stitched designs on them that are displayed in several museums out there.
By tradition, cross stitch is used to decorate items like liners, placemats, coasters, pillows, among others. It is also used to embellish clothing like those of the traditional costumes of Central and Eastern Europe. Cross stitch works that resemble paintings (which are framed and hung on the wall) were a later development to this art form. Cross stitch can also be incorporated with other forms of embroidery like the typical crewel embroidery and also needlepoint.
I know that some of you see it as somewhat old-fashioned; we usually see our grandmas and aunties do this on their spare time especially those who came from the country. But give it a chance, read this book and you might just like it and realize that this can be a good way of escaping the fast-paced life in the urban jungle. Or even if you’re a straight guy – I know of such people doing this and they’re proud of it.
In this book, you’ll be learning the basics of cross stitching – from shopping for your materials, to doing the stitches, and also taking care of your finished pieces. Do you know that the size of your work will depend on your chosen fabric? Do you also mind of the brand of thread that you’ll be using for your work? And how about washing your finished work before being framed? This book will answer all these questions for you.
You would also learn how to get started by working on sample patterns provided here. You’ll start from the basic ones and then move on decorative patterns you can easily work on.
