Note on the 2nd ed.: This 2nd edition begins with a review of the basic concepts and terms defined and described in Contemporary Medical Terminology. Our team developed this list of basic concepts and terms to serve as a bridge to introduce new readers to the concepts and terms that are developed in the main body of the book. This basic concept and term review also may serve as a way of classifying concepts and terms to help the new reader better understand how we are interested in the use of such categorization as an approach to allow for strengthened understanding of concepts and terms that a new reader may want to have. This basic term review also serves as a broad introduction to the concepts and terms we will be examining in this book. The 2nd ed. of Contemporary Medical Terms begins after the Basic Term Review.
Our focus in this book will be on defining contemporary concepts, terms, phrases, phrasings, prefixes, suffixes, root words, related terms, abbreviated forms, terms that need to be distinguished from each other, and medical theory about causation used in today’s medical conversations, discussions, journal articles, and textbooks for health and medical administrators, allied health professionals, nurses, pharmacists, social workers, and physicians, both professionals and those in-training.
A key feature of this book is the inclusion of related terms which help readers distinguish between terms that are often confused in medicine by showing what distinguishes one term from the others and how these terms inter-relate in contemporary medical usage.
We have defined contemporary medical terms in the context of related terminology to expand the user’s awareness of both the medical term of interest and closely inter-related contemporary medical terms. In this book, contemporary medical terms are approached dynamically as we focus on causation and mechanism of action in the definition of the term.
