    Introduction

When dealing with the issue of the modern hero/heroine, there are several characteristics that should be looked at and discovered. These are traits we all can display in varying degrees and at various times, whether hero or not. We all have a number of characteristics and experiences that make us who we are. These are just a few of the characteristics necessary to describing a modern day hero: humanness, grace, care, compassion, concern, honesty, hope, integrity, intelligence, faith, loyalty to God and mankind. “We the People”, living in our information age, are screaming for the genuine, the real, the authentic, and there is only one way to be right and true, just do it. My grandfather instilled in me as I grew up: “Right is right and right never wronged anybody.” He lived what he taught, and will always remain my hero.
My grandpa showed me unconditional love, and to me that was hard to comprehend. He believed in me when I didn’t believe in me. I remember countless times in my life, when I had gotten myself into trouble, the kind that shows where true friends and family are. One of those times happened while attending college in Montgomery, Alabama at Auburn University of Montgomery. Under the influence of alcohol I had gotten into trouble with the law. The charges were numerous, but petty; however, because of my history with alcohol related problems no one in my family was willing to help me. Already in his eighties, he traveled from Wilmer, Alabama to help me when he should have been sitting in his easy chair, on his front porch, sipping cool well water and enjoying the light breezes at his country home. Instead, he traveled hours away from his sanctuary by himself, and was genuinely happy to see me when he did arrive at the abyss of my life. Some have accused him of enabling me. I agree, he did enable me, but not in the way that they viciously suppose. By his acts of love, he enabled me to see unconditional love, care, concern, and compassion in a way none of his accusers could or would have, and today I can do the same for other people because he did it for me. I can believe in the person who seems absolutely hopeless, and help the homeless in a way that very few can. I have something to give to the lawbreaker that most others do not have, and that is love, care, concern, and compassion.
We hear folks comment occasionally about being perfect, and we chuckle. We know no one is perfect, but we can live a type and shadow of perfection when we truly live our lives to please our Creator. The Creator knows we are not perfect and tells us that: “In your weakness I am made strong in you. Therefore, you should gladly boast in the fact that you are imperfect, so that My power can rest upon you.” When we understand that kind of grace we can and do become heroes. For example, I have not been in trouble with the law now in over five years, and I haven’t found it necessary to take a drink or do any other extra curricular activities that go with that lifestyle in over two years. My goal today is being of maximum service to God and my fellow man. I have a burning desire to work for our countries intelligence and truly help combat the wrong in our world. I look at my own life as a 33 year old college student. Man, do I realize my mistakes, and so do many other people. That is a real blessing in disguise for a guy like me. Sharing my past as an open book really helps me know where my strength and help comes from. With this type of understanding it is also easy to remain faithful to God and man. When a person knows that it is only by Gods’ grace that they are where they are, and that every person on the face of the earth is a member in particular, it is almost easy to undertake heroic deeds and acts on a regular basis.
This is why I believe there are more to heroes than meets the eye.
D.C. and Marvel comics always show super heroes as brisk, huge, folks who carry in themselves some special
