Thirty years separated Carlisle United’s brightest days from its darkest. In 2004 the club were demoted from the Football League and banished (temporarily) to the wilderness of the Conference.
In 1974-75, however, Carlisle were playing in the biggest League of all. Alan Ashman’s players posted some famous results along the way. Derby County ended up champions but were thrashed 3-0 by Carlisle. Everton were beaten home and away. As for Manchester United, the only reason Carlisle did not face them was because the Reds were in the Second Division!
The glory was brief and ended in tears. Carlisle United also marched further in the FA Cup that season than ever before or since. But for the rub of the green, 1974-75 might have ended with Wembley and Division One survival.
Carlisle United are now on the march again. They might never taste the Premiership, but fans can relive the highs and lows of their club’s one and only Season in the Sun.
