This is a book for young people of any age.
Ben and his father arrive at the seaside town for a holiday, but Ben's father is also looking for a house to buy. Ben meets Beth when his dog Mickey tries to return Beth's purse which fell from her basket in the street. They very soon become best friends and Ben tries in his artful ways to convince his father that he should buy Wanderdown, a very old house in need of considerable improvements close to Beth's home, Midnight Farm. Beth and Ben's attempts to convince his father that he wants to buy the house aren't altogether helpful. But neither Beth, Ben or his father, who by this time has become known as Tiger, are aware of the dark and dramatic events that led to the house being empty for so many years. These events come to light when Beth and Ben decide to investigate the old house against Tiger's permission, but the consequences of this stir the waters so much that the outcome hangs in the balance.
