    About

‘A brilliantly written and exciting novel about violence, love and tragedy … it lifts the author into the top-rank of our young writers. Do read it.’ - SUNDAY EXPRESS

Neil Ingleby, a well-meaning modern man, is on sabbatical from his newspaper in an attempt to escape a failed relationship.

He quickly forms a firm friendship with a fellow traveller, Van Loon, but an innocent tour of Greek monasteries is shattered by a chance meeting with a fanatic Colonel.

Both men are swept, through indecision and a fatal desire to do good, into the white-hot violence of French North Africa.

An innocent intellectual, Ingleby believes the British traditions of reason and fair play can apply even in a world of assassinations, casual sex and ice-cold drinks.

Trapped between ruthless men like Pol, the obese and scented Barbouze, the scholarly Colonel Broussard and Ali la Joconde the terrorist leader with the frozen smile, Ingleby fails, dramatically — and horribly.

Played like a pawn from both sides, Ingleby is a victim of his own naivety and his attempts to break free from their games only entangle him further.

A gripping, violent and exotic novel, action-crammed from beginning to end. Full of spectacular effects, high-powered cars and blazing guns, it is a superb adventure story, exceptionally well written.

It makes effortless reading, but be warned: its uncompromising portrayal of violence makes it very definitely not for the squeamish …
