    About Anansi Stories

Anansi stories travelled from West Africa on the lips of the Ashanti people across perilous waters in slave ships, to reach the shores of the Caribbean and parts of the USA hundreds of years ago during the transatlantic slave trade. As the slaves worked on the plantations, they continued telling Anansi Stories as their way of escaping from the reality of their harsh conditions. Anansi was a spider, and sometimes a man, who was able to use trickery to escape from any difficult situation and get what he wanted. The tradition of Anansi storytelling still survives today, and the stories are told in several languages not only in the Caribbean region but also in West Africa, where the stories originated, and Southern USA.
This re-told story, like others in the series "The Adventures of Anansi in the Great Fern Forest", seeks to portray Anansi in a positive light. He is not selfish. He uses his gift of trickery to help those considered weaker and less important in the rain forest, while putting to shame those trying to take advantage of them.
The stories are also available in English and Spanish, and are suitable for young beginning learners of these languages.
