    About

One day, out in the veld in South Africa, where the blond grass grows tall, -- by a little water hole, under the shade of a big, hollow baobab tree, a baby monkey was born. He was not like the other monkeys, his eyes were small and beady, and he looked positively stupid, but more than that, he looked crafty! Having a sense of humor, his parents called him “Mampara,” which means “big fool!” All the monkeys laughed at that, and it seemed, to Mampara, that from then on, they laughed at him whenever they saw him. Poor Mampara!

The old leader coughed pointedly, and the noise subsided hastily. Mampara had his hand up. “What do you want, Mampara?” asked one monkey. “I want to be the leader,” said Mampara. The whole troop burst into laughter, and they laughed, and they laughed, and they laughed.

Experience Africa as you go on a quest with Mampara, the plucky little monkey, who struggles to gain the respect of his troop, and to find his place in his tribe. You will be inspired by this charming, light-hearted tale and its positive attitude. Along the way, you’ll learn a little Zulu and a whole lot besides as the unique wonder world of South Africa, the neighboring Kalahari Desert; and all its varied peoples, animals, plants and environment opens up to the reader as never before:

Learn More notes at the back tell more about the history of Southern Africa, including the fascinating story of Shaka, the mighty Zulu king sometimes called the "Black Napoleon," set in his historical context; how our story relates to him; and his relevance to modern day South Africa. You will also find out about other amazing things of Africa in these notes. This book will be treasured as an inspiration to life, issues, the environment, and South Africa itself, for many years to come.

Includes a glossary of foreign words. Excellent as the basis for a theme-study of South Africa.
