    About

In this report, I argue against the postulation proposed by Aoshima (2001) that Japanese obligatory control complements are not headed by TP projection. Aoshima proposes that anaphoric ambiguity, negative polarity items (NPIs), why adjunction and nominative objects in Japanese altogether block a TP projection from control complement where OC PRO is involved. First I will argue that Aoshima’s demonstration on why adjunction is only partial, and then I will provide instances involving Japanese adverb hierarchy, NPIs, and Partial Control to show that CP/TP projections where OC PRO is involved are necessary; Aoshima’s case in point fails to account for such exclusions and cannot coordinate a comprehensive strategy involving Japanese control.
