Introduction
Ode to Scabies
Scabies is a parasitic disease which live on the human skin
It is associated with personal contact and poor hygiene.
It is most often transmitted by direct skin-to-skin contact
It is also common in nursing homes and child care centers.
The mites causing scabies burrow into the skin and lay their eggs
In young children, the infection may be on the neck, shoulders and head
All scabies cause intense skin rash and itching
Scabies can be spread through bedding or clothing
Skin scrapings are taken from a burrow to look for the mites.
They are examined microscopically for the scabies parasite. The cream most often used is 5% permethrin Benzyl benzoate and malathion applied on the skin
In most cases the scabies are killed with the above insecticides
A single overnight 8 hours application is needed of the scabicide
Sexual contacts and family members should all be treated
While clothing and bedding should be machine dried or heated
-An original poem by Kenneth Kee

Bathing is followed by application of the scabicide to the whole body from the neck to soles, left for 24 hours. A single overnight application of the scabicide (8 hours) is washed off the following morning A second application four to seven days later is often recommended.
