Eight years into our experience, and knowing that, when we moved to North-West Spain in 2006, we were very green indeed, I feel my Hubby and I have many moments to share with the ‘would be’ imminent expat. Living one’s dream has to first pass through some very difficult stages: not knowing what’s going on, as the culture is very different; loosing out on important information at the doctor’s, the hospital etc., due to not being a native speaker; wondering why they don’t do things like we do back home, when our way “is obviously much better:; trying to get used to not having the small things that were important to you in your previous life, whether it be a certain kind of biscuit, a particular service, or access to ‘real’ entertainment and television. Indeed, absence does make the heart grow fonder and time has to pass before an expat will begin to feel that yes, they do belong in their new ‘home’.
Maybe you’ve thought about jumping ship, maybe you’ve got so far along in the process and then got cold feet and maybe you now look back and think “hmmm, did I do the right thing by doing nothing at all?” This book will give you an insight into the hair-raising times you may have gone through in your new country, though this book looks at Spain, a country which means also changing your language, an added consideration when moving lock, stock and barrel.
Please enjoy my honest babbling, try to feel the feelings and then decide what your new future should be – staying put or going into a new world.
And would I go back to England? Hmm …. Who knows what the future might bring?
