The 2013 NBA Draft was not supposed to have any budding stars. Player personnel experts could not agree upon a clear consensus No. 1 pick among the crop of entrants. The media panned the draft for its lack of star quality, dogging the Cleveland Cavaliers for selecting UNLV power forward Anthony Bennett with the top pick. There was not supposed to be a special star in that year’s lottery, and finding talent outside the top 10 was not even a conversation. Teams were rumored to be setting themselves up for a lottery pick in the upcoming 2014 Draft, which featured ‘can’t-miss’ players such as Andrew Wiggins of Kansas and Jabari Parker of Duke.
But there was one name that defied expectations. One player rose up to challenge the thought that none of the rookies could make an immediate impact that season. Apparently, Philadelphia 76ers point guard Michael Carter-Williams (MCW) did not receive the memo.
MCW came into the NBA as an unconventional rookie. Standing at 6’6” and with arms that could stretch out to forever, Carter-Williams was a point guard in the mold of the likes of Penny Hardaway, Magic Johnson, and Jason Kidd. He was tall, long, and athletic. But he was never highly-touted, especially since his draft class was not all that unusual, either.
But Carter-Williams proved the world wrong by doing exactly what people thought he would not do—excel. In the rookie’s first game as the starting point guard for a rebuilding Philadelphia 76ers team, he outshone even LeBron James himself to lead his squad past the powerhouse Miami Heat. With 22 points, seven rebounds, 12 assists, and nine steals, Carter-Williams immediately showed the NBA what he could do at his peak.
