When Oscar-winning director decides to go to Vietnam to film a version of Graham Greene's Cold War novella, he encounters problems. Casting American war hero Audie Murphy as the leading star has box-office power, but Audie is far from a director's kind of actor. He has his own unique perspective (and brings his long-time aide Willard Willingham with him for assistance). Michael Redgrave also joins the group.
