    About

In summarizing the 100-year history of rapid transit planning and development in the Toronto area using maps and interpretive text, Ed Levy has emphasized the recurring concept of an enhanced central area rapid transit network. In doing so, he hopes to make the strongest possible case for creating such a network that, while being confined to the most densely developed and most diversified parts of the City of Toronto, would nevertheless enable the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area as a whole to function and grow more efficiently. This book is dedicated in memory of Anthony C. Coombes, Architect, Planner, and ardent “city advocate,” a friend and colleague who never failed to encourage me in this endeavour. In his quiet, gentle way he rarely ended a conversation without imparting a wealth of insight regarding ways in which cities should be designed and maintained to enhance comfort, opportunity, convenience, and security for residents and visitors alike.
