“Then what will it be like, Sander? We are not cut out for that kind of life and how long would it take before you started to hate me? Or for me to start hating you because that is where we were? Can you look me in the eye and tell me that you don’t feel disloyal, that you don’t hate to lie to your crew?”
“No,” he said honestly. “But I can tell you I want to start a new crew, with you.”
“It’s just us, Sander, and we don’t have anything or anyone else.”
“Then it will be the two of us, and we’ll figure it out. We can’t go back, Bella, and I don’t want to let you go. Look me in the eye and tell me you don’t want me, that you don’t want this.”
“I don’t want to take you down with me.”
He studied her face. “I got you into this, Bella, and now here we are. You aren’t taking me down. If anyone is to blame for this, it’s me. Now let it go, okay?”
She put the safety back on the gun. “Okay.”
He took her into his arms and her body pressed against his, the heat and scent of her filling his nostrils. She trembled slightly and he caressed her back before speaking again. “I have to go out. I need you to promise that you are going to stay in the house and that you’ll hide if anyone shows up. Can you promise me that?”
“I can.”
He released her, but not before giving her a long kiss that torched his senses and made him want to crawl right back in the bed with her. “I love you and I’ll be back, I promise.”
