Unredeemed Past gives vice to experiences by Austrian and Austrian Jewish women during World War II and the Holocaust through a social and historical reading of fiction, creative non-fiction and memoirs by post-World War II Austrian women writers. Texts by women who were exiles to China or Great Britain, girls and women struggling to survive on the home front, activists in the Austrian resistance and informed second- and third-generation chroniclers reveal deeply personal stories of ordinary girls and women facing extraordinary times. Their stories bear witness to the past and contribute to reshaping Austria's history and its national identity in the twenty-first century. The volume will engage and inform all readers with an interest in women's history and literature, Holocaust studies, and Austrian studies.
