Most people’s perception of the West is cowboys and Indians of a century ago, mountains, sparse population, and snow. Many people do not realize that what the mountain west represents in North American is over two billion years of significant change that shaped our continent in ways no other region has experienced. The Wet Mountain region is probably one of the most important areas geologically in North America.
When most people think of Western Hemisphere history they think back when Columbus first arrived and the Europeans followed, however most people do not realize that the Wet Mountains and surrounding regions have been a focal point for human contact and culture for over 25,000 years. People look at the Wets and other mountainous areas and they see a challenge in climbing them, skiing in the winter months, and perhaps some wildlife. What they fail to realize that is within the ecological and environmental aspects of this landscape are key to human survival. The author stresses that if we do not learn to manage our environment we are in for some very hard times and maybe even doomed. These mountains contain lessons for us to help us learn to manage these aspects.
The author wanted to publish just photographs from his large portfolio, however after reviewing the photograph only book, it did not satisfactory depict what he wanted the readers to envisage. Using his knowledge and writing skills he supported these photographs and created a strong vision of these mountains. He enlisted his years of roaming in, out, and through the Wet Mountains, Wet Mountain Valley, and the Spanish Peaks Batholiths'. He has applied his knowledge and his photography into a unique story using the three main subjects of this book, the history, culture & heritage, and geology. By using these factors to support a much needed ecological and environmental friendly campaign to respect, conserve, and be aware of the resources’ that can easily be depleted within a generation.
Tom is a big believer of history repeating itself and has cited several instances when and uncaring, uninformed, and uneducated constituent has allowed what can easily happen to Southern Colorado. After the Jades complete the Journey in a light-hearting dialog, the Book reflects on what does all this all means.
