INTRODUCTION
Spanish Reader for Intermediate Students II is part of a
collection of teaching materials I have put together in the course of 30 years’ hands-on experience teaching Spanish as a Foreign Language in my dear Costa Rica.
When I began my teaching career in 1982- as a teacher of ESL and Spanish as a Foreign Language- working at two of the most prominent Language Schools in Costa Rica, there were very few Spanish language teaching resource to help teachers plan engaging and interesting lessons.
We used Spanish Grammar textbooks with exercises drilling exercises that seemed to fulfill their purpose; however, there was still a challenge to be met: students required a more creative approach to practicing conversation in class in order to acquire language skills thus enabling them to achieve fluency as well as greater understanding of Grammar beyond the sole purpose of repeating.
I personally came across a mayor challenge. I felt the need to keep my students interested in attending class and sufficiently motivated to continue making an effort to become involved in the difficulties of learning Grammar.
I began creating materials that I would bring to the classroom with the hopes of building on the Grammar I was teaching, and students were already beginning to dread. Creating such materials was and continues to be my passion.
As my strategies began to take effect, I became motivated to write a series of short stories for Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced levels that students would be able to use in class and find interesting to read without realizing it was a subtle way to take in Grammar.
Please take into account, this reader was written in Spanish that is spoken in Central America and Costa Rica; therefore, it may differ at times from the Spanish you have learned if you have studied in Spain and South America.
I hope you find this Spanish Reader useful as well as entertaining.
Enjoy,
Iris
