On the Monday following the Scottish Referendum of 2014 the body of Hannah Kemp, mother and grandmother, is found in her smoke-damaged farmhouse on the Isle of Cumbrae in the Firth of Clyde near Glasgow. The circumstances of her death appear baffling. She is naked and bound in the ritualistic manner of Japanese shibari; on her bedside cabinet an empty bottle of sake and some legal highs. A scarlet kimono has been placed over her. The quest to solve the puzzle to this crime takes Detective Chief Inspector Ninian Plenderleith and his team from Police Scotland to the very heart of island life and beyond.
