This research project investigates communicative modes and methods in 3D character animation in relation to the established research question and proposed research project. I have focused towards the creation of a 3D modelled scene and character to be used in conjunction with one another to create a storyboard, in order to present findings as well as using this to act as one of the base instruments to study and from which to collect data.
Overall, the storyboard, multiple character poses and group shot have been produced to present and explain the findings. This allowed an analysis of the idea of creating emotion through characters and exploring what methods could be used to help observers correctly interpret the intended emotional state of characters. By using various methods it is possible to create a more easily readable emotional character. This has been done through various techniques such as body language, posture and proxemics, which are used to project a character’s mental and emotional state whilst finding out what techniques characters use to express emotion and provoke a sense of believability and understanding for the observers.
I wanted to look at the topic of not only how audiences’ “understand characters” but how those characters accomplish the task of creating an emotional response or state that is easily readable.
