Popcorn and Football Don’t Mix is the poignant story of a young boy who is forced to hustle even though he would rather play football. When Jake Sande was very young his mother developed tuberculosis. When she moved to a sanatorium Jake’s sister moved in with her grandma but Jake was required to remain at home with his father who was an unemployed hustler. Eventually, Jake’s mother died. Jake’s father expected Jake to hustle at fairs, carnivals, parades and any place else people gathered to have a good time. When Jake was eight years old he hustled pop at the Minneapolis Aquatennial, when he was ten years old he was in charge of an ice cream trailer at the Iowa State Fair and when he was eleven years old he worked in a souvenir booth at the Minnesota State Fair. Jake’s friends were jealous of him because he went to all of the fairs and carnivals. He would rather have played football with his friends. However, when he was finally old enough to be on the JV football team his father’s demands interfered with his football practices. Jake’s goal was to play football. He was afraid he’d never get the chance.
