What I remember is not hitting the ground. What I remember is the sensation of passing through the ground, of breathing in dirt.
I thought I was dead and found myself wondering if I would see my mom.
Then I was standing in total darkness. I could hear men shouting. I could feel the ground move. I stumbled and found myself pinned to the ground by something heavy. Wood. It was a wooden beam. A light blinked on and I shouted at it. A lantern. It moved closer. Another man with fear on his face.
"I'm sorry Stan," he said and then turned and headed out.
More pressure. Earth. I was underground. I would die there.
