A stone age tribe faces extinction
Isolated by a changing climate, hemmed in by arid wasteland, a band of prehistoric humans faces extinction. Too many mouths to feed - the tribes have grown too big. They’ve hunted too fiercely, and the animals are gone. The waterholes are dry, the rains don’t come. Their world has changed, and they need a way out.
As the young men of the tribe go in search of a new home, Temfe, the chief’s son, must learn to lead his clansmen, before they betray him. To survive in a harsh world, surrounded by enemies, he must gather new allies. Discover new weapons. Learn new ways of seeing the world.
In the African rift valley, 43,000 years BCE, a spark of consciousness flares into life. The dawn of human culture, the fire that will reshape the world.
A young hunter sets out to save his tribe
Temfe is fifteen, son of the chief, considered a man and ready to become bonded to Yamba, a young woman his own age. He should lead the hunters, but they ignore him. His broken foot means he can’t run, and Kofu, the big man of the tribe, despises him. Kofu mocks the crippled Temfe, and determines to take the beautiful Yamba for himself.
War is coming, starvation stalks the people
The elders of the tribe send the young men on a mission to find a way across the dry lands. Temfe knows Kofu and the others hunters will give up too easily. Kofu prefers war with the other tribes, defending what they have and staying in their traditional home.
Temfe’s father Beru, chief of the tribe, puts his faith in his son, and tells him the future of the tribe is in his hands.
When the other hunters turn back, Temfe and his friend Ngoh keep going. But as they struggle to find a way across the desert, they will face enemies old and new, from man-eating tribes to wild animals and traitors in their own tribe.
A young woman fights for her freedom
Left at home, Yamba has her own battles to face. Can she win her freedom from the brutal Kofu? Can the women of the tribe stop the war? And will Temfe ever return, or must Yamba accept his death and find her own way, in this life or the next?
As they wait for news, the tribe gathers around the camp fire, sharing stories, looking for answers. The choices they make will change their world forever.
