The Hickson & Welch chemical plant stood on the same site for close to 100 years, its history is intertwined with that of Castleford and yet in all that time few apart from employees ever got to see inside the gates. This necessary insulation led to a deep mistrust by some local residents and their fears were justified on at least two occasions when lives were lost.
