Interview with the author
Q – Aren’t there lots of books about career change? Why do we need another one?
A – There are loads of career change books out there – I don’t pretend this is the first! One of the problems with almost all career change books, though, is that they treat change as a one-off. “I hate my job, so if I make this one change, then everything will be great!”
But what happens if you don’t like the second career either? If you go through a massive once-in-a-lifetime exercise, you can feel more demoralized than ever if it doesn’t work out.
Q – So what makes the Career Change series different?
A – This series isn’t just about leaving the career you hate – it’s about embracing an entirely new path for your future. In this series, you’ll discover how to constantly repackage what experience you already have into a new career that you’ve never tried before. Then, when you grow tired of that, morph and adapt again – and again!
The Career Change series is about learning how to change as a normal course of habit. Once you learn how to navigate a new career, it becomes easier and easier to keep on changing. Because for high performers or anyone else who just wants to be happy in their careers: boredom is not an option.
Q – What makes you an expert in career change?
A – A lot of experts on career change are Human Resources (HR) pros who have studied what other people do. Not me.
I’ve worked over 65 jobs in my 39 years, reaching across a dozen industries, private and public sectors – and six countries. I went from fine arts to finance; hospitality to project management; client services to business process analysis. If there’s a career out there, I’ve probably worked some role in it.
And that’s what makes me uniquely qualified to talk about career change: I don’t skim across theories that other people develop. I’ve lived it, I’ve done it.
Q – I want to love my job – how do I leave the job that I hate?
A – If you hate your job, you’re in the clear majority! But the biggest mistake we can make is setting small targets for change. In this series you’ll learn how to set BIG goals that seem ridiculously far away – but can be achieved way faster than you think. In no time at all, you’ll be in a job that you love!
Q – In what order should I read the books?
A – Since each book builds on the one before it, you might be flying a bit blind if you jump out of sequence. To get the most of the Career Change series, you should probably read them in the following order:
1. Quit Your Job! How to avoid the pitfalls of being a traditional employee – and design a career that will get you hired in any market.
2. Build A New Career! How to redefine your career and take it wherever you want – no matter where you’ve been.
3. Get The Job You Deserve! How to build your network, leverage your connections, and sell your talents for a great new career.
