George H. Love was an American businessman and industrialist in control of two major corporations – the Consolidation Coal Company (the country’s largest coal company) and the Chrysler Corporation – and was an active director on the board of directors of many of America’s largest companies and banks including National Steel, Mellon Bank, General Electric, Union Carbide and Chrysler. Love was known for his innovation in mining processes, his even-handed negotiations with unions and his ability to turn around unprofitable, poorly-managed businesses. At the request of Wesley W. Posvar, president of the University of Pittsburg, Mr. Love’s experience, philosophies and contributions to American business were chronicled in an oral history which was compiled based on eleven interviews conducted with Mr. Love in 1988 by Frances M. Amatucci.
