    About

Upon hearing that land was still available for homesteading in Alaska. Keith, Shirley and Shirley's younger brother, left Billings, Montana on March 1, 1959, drove over the Alcan, to arrive in Homer AK on March 18th. Preceeded by a heavy snowstorm, they spent two months waiting for the snow to melt. An original "Alaskan Sourdough,"invited them to live with him and take care of his place while he visited the lower "48."

Where there, Shirley mastered a coal range and made sourdough pancake. Speedy, the fisherman tried to introduced them to delicious Alaskan seafood. They met many of the friendly homesteaders and learned about a religius cult that was also there to homestead.

When Shirley suspected she was pregnant, she visited the local doctor; was shocked to find medical practice was about fifty years back in time. On May 21rst they moved to the homestead, on the bench above Homer and started to prove up their claim.

In the wildly beautiful countryside, they survived fire, killing frost, abandoned wild dogs and were terrorized by a Grizzly with cubs. Before they left they Salmon fished on the Anchor river and partied in town with Air Force sholdiers stationed at Mt Ohlson.
