It does exactly what it says on the cover, that is recall the time spent working as a British Rail train guard on the Southern Region between the years 1979 and 1983. Those few years saw a change in working relations between staff, management and the unions, but it also heralded in new technolgy, working practices and modernisation. This is a personal view, but a valid one nethertheless, that will hopefully give those reading it an insight into the rail industry of the period. More than that it covers a part of our social history when times were changing, not only industrial action was taking place, but political upheaval and terrorism formed a part of life, not so very different from what we find ourselves in now!
Within these 34 pages you will find anger, loyalty, respect, suspicion, death, horror, amusement, friendship and fun. Indeed, experiences such as these are not uncommon in other working environments of the time, even nowadays, but railways are that little bit different, a microcosm of life perpetually on the move.
