    About

ITV’s The Durrells took Gerald Durrell’s autobiographical Corfu trilogy and whipped it into an unmissable Sunday night treat. The story of middle-class 1930’s lone parent Louisa dragging her feckless spawn over to the sunbaked Greek island came complete with an alarming menagerie of characters - human and otherwise. Viewers watched enthralled as Louisa battled her hopeless addiction to Swedish schlong while reining in the excesses of her children - foppish pseud Larry, cranky gun nut Leslie, directionless dope Margo and likeable space cadet Gerry. Poor as church mice, the Durrells are nonetheless as free as the wild animals that roam the island hills and walkways. The various ways they misuse that freedom form the hard-beating heart of this always entertaining show.

TV critic James Donaghy is your guide through the first series. All the spectacular fauna, run-ins with the law and unlikely sexual innuendo lovingly recapped for your reading pleasure.
