In 1966, a phenomenon first hit the television screens in America, Britain and around the world, as the USS Enterprise began its five-year voyage: "To explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before." Commanded by Captain James T. Kirk and with a crew of over four hundred men and women, the Enterprise was dispatched by Starfleet Command to explore the galaxy.
Soon the storylines began to concentrate on the roles of a small number of the characters. Foremost among these were Captain Kirk, played by William Shatner, Mr. Spock, played by Leonard Nimoy and Dr. 'Bones' McCoy, played by DeForest Kelley.
There was also a secondary tier of co-stars. Among these were Scotty, the Enterprise's chief engineer, played by James Doohan; Sulu, the ship's helmsman, played by George Takei; and the Enterprise's communications officer, Uhura, played by Nichelle Nichols.
In the second series, they were joined by Ensign Pavel Chekov, the ship's navigator, played by Walter Koenig.
Sadly, DeForest Kelley died in 1999, with James Doohan following in 2005.
