Mountains, Lochs and Lonely Spots
A Tour of Scotland in a VW Campervan
Join the author, his partner and their little dog Clem on a grand tour of Scotland in a classic T2 VW Campervan. From a monster hunting trip on Loch Ness, a journey inside a hollow mountain and a wander round the streets of Edinburgh, the tour covers a number of popular attractions but also takes in a few places not on the usual tourist itinerary, including:
An abandoned family theme park where the crowds are long gone, grass grows unchecked and rollercoasters slowly rust in the permadrizzle; a decaying, crumbling mental asylum no longer in use; an isolated house with an enormous concrete pineapple where the roof should be.
Throw in a tour of the lonely roads of Skye and a look at Eilean Donan Castle, the William Wallace Monument, the Glenfinnan Monument at Loch Shiel and the amazing Falkirk Wheel and you have a trip where the wonders of Scotland are revealed in all their glory.

This book is available as part of the collected travel writing of Steve Roach – the large format deluxe illustrated paperback ‘Terra Firma Travels’ is now available on Amazon, featuring all travel books bundled together.
Review from Sam Manicom, author of 'Tortillas to Totems', 'Distant Suns', 'Under Asian Skies' and 'Into Africa':-
If you’ve never been to Scotland and are wondering what it’s all about, then you would do very well to start here. Mountains, Lochs & Lonely Spots is a mix of awe, controversy, historical quirks, and the ups and downs of travelling in an aging but quite able VW camper van.
The author has a sense of humour that is so dry it leaves you thirsty at times, but that thirst is more than satisfied by his down to earth writing style, his observations (some of which will challenge you) and the research that’s been done.
I learnt much about my neighbouring country. It made me sit up and think and it also made me wonder if actually, touring Scotland by VW van is the way to go.
About the author:
Steve Roach works in multiple genres including travel writing, fiction and illustrated children's books (with artist Simon Schild). With a large selection of books garnering impressive reviews, Steve's output is diverse, sometimes thought-provoking, entertaining and always interesting.
Working within the Independent market gives Steve the freedom to explore some unusual ideas and avoid being pigeon-holed. Without the marketing resources of a mainstream publisher, readers have to search out Steve's work but once they have they usually stick around to see what's coming next. A number of Steve's books have reached the #1 spot in the bestseller charts on Amazon in their respective categories. During the last 3 years, nearly 50,000 people have read his work. For an 'indie' author, this is a tremendous achievement.
