Ashes to Ashes
Survival Fiction Book 1
Shades of crimson still color the haze that hangs in a shroud around the planet, providing an eerie hue to the little bit of sunlight that penetrates through. The microscopic dust that fills the air makes breathing difficult at times. The heavier particles of dust still cling to the surface of everything; the color is all but gone from the world, the landscape is gray and white.
The ranch Lilly calls home is just outside Mt. Rainier National Park. When the first tremors and explosions erupted from Mt. Rainier the horses were still in the corral…her father and mother left the house to get the horses to the stable, they never returned, they are not among the horses; at least she could not see them from the window.
The ground continues to shake and the house groans as the heavy timbers shift and sway; threatening to come crashing down around her. She knows that Mt. Rainer is an active volcano and periodically she had felt it rumble to life; but this?
No television, cell phone, or internet, no electricity, and no contact with the outside world. Lilly’s only source of information is a small crank radio…she heard the first reports hours after her parents left to save the horses and guide them to the stables. The devastation was global…some reports spoke of a catastrophe within and around the ring of fire; others spouted about earthquakes along long dead faults, the reports were chaos.
The original information given to those who could hear it through their radios was to stay put. Stay indoors or get to a safe place indoors and remain there until emergency forces could be mobilized.
Now, Lilly must make a choice, stay inside and wait for a rescue that may never come or go outside and take her chances…maybe find her parents, hopefully find safety.
